Bloating is one of the most aggravating symptoms because of how uncomfortable and embarrassing it can be!
When attempts to avoid beans and broccoli fail, it’s time to get to the root cause.
Here are some driving factors we look for when a client comes to us with bloating:
1️⃣Food Reactions
While beans often come to mind when thinking about foods that cause bloating, there are several other culprits. Some people are reactive to gluten, dairy, or other foods they eat every day without even thinking about it.
2️⃣Gut Dysbiosis
Gut dysbiosis refers to an imbalance in the gut microbiome, which consists of trillions of bacteria living within our digestive system. An overgrowth of yeast or unwanted bacteria can disrupt the delicate balance and lead to bloating.
3️⃣Hormones
Hormonal changes can also play a role in bloating. Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels can cause fluid retention, leading individuals to mistakenly believe they have a digestive problem.
4️⃣SIBO or IBS
Two commonly diagnosed conditions associated with bloating are Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). SIBO occurs when bacteria from the large intestine migrate to the small intestine, causing excessive gas production and bloating. IBS, on the other hand, is a chronic condition characterized by abdominal pain, irregular bowel movements, and bloating. Distinguishing between these two conditions is essential for developing an effective treatment plan.
5️⃣Stress
The stress hormone cortisol can have a big impact on digestion. Unmanaged stress can lead to an increase in intestinal gas production and bloating as well as the other common digestive discomforts such as diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, nausea, and acid reflux. Reducing stress is key for improving digestive health.
7️⃣Celiac Disease
Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition in which the body reacts to the consumption of gluten by attacking itself. The immune response can cause bloating and other digestive disturbances, as well as long-term damage to the small intestine if left untreated.
