Intermittent Fasting for Beginners

Intermittent Fasting for Beginners

If you’re looking to improve your health, intermittent fasting may be worth considering. This type of fasting has been shown to have a number of health benefits. But it’s not for everyone. In this blog post, we’ll discuss what intermittent fasting is, the benefits associated with it, and who should consider trying it. We’ll also provide some tips for beginners who are thinking about giving intermittent fasting a try!

What is Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting (IF) is an eating plan that cycles between periods of fasting and non-fasting over time. It’s not a diet or weight loss program, but rather just another way to eat! There are many different types of intermittent fasting plans out there, but the most common is 16:8,  sixteen hours of fasting followed by eight hours of eating.

Benefits

There are a number of benefits associated with IF, including weight loss, improved mental clarity and decreased inflammation. Below is a more detailed look at some of the main benefits:

  • Weight Loss: One of the biggest benefits associated with IF is weight loss. It’s not a diet, but it can help you lose weight if that’s your goal! Studies have shown that people who fast intermittently tend to eat fewer calories than those who don’t — resulting in more pounds shed off their frames over time.
  • Improved Mental Clarity: IF has also been shown to improve mental clarity.  As your body enters into a fasting state, it releases more beta-endorphins which are responsible for making us feel happy and relaxed; this can help reduce anxiety levels in some people as well!
  • Decreased Inflammation: IF has been shown to decrease inflammation throughout your body. This is due to the fact that when  you’re fasting, your body produces less reactive oxygen species (ROS) and less free radicals. These are all molecules that can damage cells and lead to inflammation. This means less aches and pains, as well as a reduced risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

Who Should Consider Trying Intermittent Fasting?

  • Intermittent fasting is not for everyone! If you have any medical conditions or are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should  speak to a doctor before trying IF.
  • Otherwise, if you’re generally healthy and are looking for another way to improve your health, intermittent fasting may be worth considering! Just make sure that you start slowly and ease into it — as it can be tough to suddenly change your eating habits.

Tips for Beginners

If you’re thinking about trying intermittent fasting, you’ll want to keep these tips in mind:

  • Start Slow: As with any lifestyle change, it’s important to start slow and ease into it. Don’t jump right in by trying a 16-hour fast! Instead, start with something more manageable like 12 hours or so — then gradually increase your fasting window over time.
  • Find What Works Best for You: There are many different types of intermittent fasting plans out there. Some people prefer the 16:8 method where they eat during an eight-hour window and fast for the remaining sixteen hours (aka, from noon until dinner). Others might like something more flexible such as eating within a six-hour window and fast for 18 hours. The bottom line is that you’ll need to find what works best for your lifestyle and schedule!
  • Stay Hydrated: It’s important not just with fasting but in general, drinking enough water is crucial for good health. If you’re considering trying IF, it’s even more necessary because when we eat less food during the day, we tend to drink less as well. So make sure you’re drinking plenty of water throughout your fasting period — or else it may lead to dehydration!
  • Don’t Give Up: Finally, don’t give up if intermittent fasting isn’t working for you right away.  You might need some time before your body adjusts and gets used to the new schedule, so keep trying!

Intermittent fasting may not be for everyone.  If you are unsure if intermittent fasting might be right for you, consult with your doctor first. They can help determine if this type of lifestyle change would be safe and beneficial based on your current health status!
