How Stress Affects Your Body

How Stress Affects Your Body

Stress doesn’t always look like panic.
Sometimes it’s snapping at someone you love.
Sometimes it’s staring blankly at your screen, unable to move.
Sometimes it’s saying “yes” when you’re screaming “no” inside.

Understanding how stress affects the body is key to recognizing these signs. Your body doesn’t stop to ask why you’re overwhelmed. Whether it’s a real emergency or just your inbox flooding at 8 a.m., it interprets stress the same way: as a threat.

And it reacts — instantly.

This is your survival nervous system kicking in, doing exactly what it was designed to do. But when that system stays switched “on” for too long, it can begin to take a toll — physically, mentally, and emotionally.

The 4 Survival Responses: Fight, Flight, Freeze & Fawn

Most people have heard of “fight or flight,” but that’s only part of the picture. Your body has several built-in responses when it senses danger — even if that “danger” is a stressful workday or emotional conflict.

Here’s how your nervous system might react:

🔥 Fight

You feel tense, hot, agitated, maybe even angry. Your jaw tightens, your heart races, and your body braces to protect or defend.

🏃‍♀️ Flight

You need to escape. Whether that’s physically leaving a situation or mentally checking out, your system is trying to flee from pressure or discomfort.

🧊 Freeze

You shut down. You feel stuck, disconnected, or numb. Your thoughts may slow, and your body can feel heavy. This is your system pressing pause when it doesn’t know what else to do.

🤝 Fawn

You slip into people-pleasing mode. You avoid conflict, stay agreeable, and put others’ needs above your own. It’s your body’s way of staying safe by seeking connection and approval.

None of these responses mean you’re broken — they mean you’re human. Each is a survival reflex shaped by your biology, your experiences, and what your body has learned over time.

What’s Going on Inside: Stress, Cortisol, and Your Adrenal Glands

Your body was designed for short-term stress — like running from danger and then returning to a state of calm.

But today, many of us are living in a state of chronic, low-grade stress: endless notifications, emotional overload, poor sleep, undernourishment, overwork, unresolved trauma. And your nervous system doesn’t know the difference between emotional and physical threats — it just reacts.

Your adrenal glands — two small glands that sit above your kidneys — play a central role here. When you’re stressed, they release key hormones like:

  • Cortisol – Keeps you alert and helps your body respond to stress
  • Adrenaline – Increases heart rate and mobilizes energy in an emergency

These hormones are helpful in short bursts, but when they’re constantly elevated, they can lead to:

  • Feeling “wired but tired”
  • Sleep disruption (can’t fall or stay asleep)
  • Blood sugar swings and cravings
  • Brain fog and difficulty focusing
  • Fatigue, mood shifts, or even burnout
  • Hormonal and gut imbalances over time

This is often referred to as adrenal dysregulation — your body is still doing its best to protect you, but the system is under strain.

So What Can You Do?

You don’t need to fight your stress response.
You don’t need to “power through” or pretend you’re fine.

The first step is simply noticing what your body is telling you. Awareness is the doorway to regulation, healing, and recovery.

When you understand the why behind your reactions, you can meet yourself with more compassion — and begin to support your system in real, lasting ways.
