Chocolate peppermint smoothie topped with chia seeds and cacao nibs, garnished with fresh mint leaves

Rich, creamy, and deeply chocolatey with a cool, refreshing hint of peppermint, this smoothie is as nourishing as it is delicious.

It’s built entirely from whole-food ingredients, ready in under two minutes, and packed with protein, fiber, healthy fats, and antioxidants that support steady energy, heart health, and your gut.

Chocolate protein powder forms the foundation. Protein at the start of the day slows carbohydrate absorption, keeps you full, and supports steady energy through the morning, along with muscle repair, immune function, and the hormones and enzymes your body makes every day.

Ingredient Spotlight

Two Ingredients Doing the Heavy Lifting

🍫

Unsweetened Cocoa

Deep chocolate flavor, plus flavanols and minerals.

Cocoa is rich in flavanol antioxidants like epicatechin and catechin, which have been studied for supporting healthy blood flow and blood vessel function, with modest effects on blood pressure in some studies.

It’s also a good source of magnesium, a mineral involved in hundreds of enzyme reactions, from energy production to nervous system function and blood sugar balance. Unsweetened cocoa or raw cacao powder gives you the most flavanols.

Avocado

The secret to that silky, milkshake-thick texture.

Just a quarter of an avocado makes this smoothie remarkably creamy. Its monounsaturated fats support heart health and help your body absorb fat-soluble nutrients and antioxidants from the rest of the blend.

Avocado also adds potassium, folate, vitamin K, and fiber, which supports digestion and slows the release of energy so this smoothie keeps you satisfied for hours.

The Supporting Players

Every other ingredient in the blend is pulling its weight, too.

🌱

Chia Seeds

Plant omega-3s (ALA) and soluble fiber that feeds beneficial gut bacteria.

🌿

Peppermint

Long used to support digestion. Its bright aroma may help you feel more alert.

🥛

Almond Milk

A light, dairy-free base that lets the chocolate and mint shine.

💪

Protein

A complete amino acid foundation for steady energy and muscle repair.

The Recipe

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to your blender.
  2. Blend on high for 60 to 90 seconds, until smooth and creamy.
  3. Add a touch more almond milk if it’s too thick.
  4. Pour into a glass and enjoy right away. Top with a sprinkle of chia seeds, cacao nibs, or a fresh mint leaf if you like.

Make It Your Way

  • Make it a true mocha: add ½ cup cold brew or 1 tsp instant espresso.
  • Sweeter: add ½ frozen banana or 1 pitted date.
  • Extra thick: add ½ cup frozen cauliflower rice. You won’t taste it.
  • Nut-free: swap almond milk for coconut milk.
  • More staying power: add 1 tbsp almond butter or a scoop of plant-based yogurt.
  • Protein powder: any clean, dairy-free chocolate protein works here. Here’s the one I use.
Pharmacist Note

Go easy on the peppermint extract; a little goes a long way. And if you deal with heartburn, peppermint can relax the valve between your stomach and esophagus and make reflux worse for some people. Start with a single drop, or see my post on natural approaches to acid reflux.

The Protein I Use

Clean, Dairy-Free Chocolate Protein

This is the chocolate protein powder I reach for in smoothies like this one. It blends smooth, keeps the recipe dairy-free, and doubles down on the rich chocolate flavor.
